Butterflies and Spring

Each year the birth of spring signals the start of wonderful things.  Flowers bloom, the brown earth is suddenly green and the day’s light shines longer.   Children begin the countdown to the start of their summer vacation.  Visions of beaches, boating, bicycling and vacations preoccupy most everyone’s mind.  The winter apparel is packed away and the flips flops and shorts are worn the minute the temperature rises. Birds sing, ducks in the water glide happily from shore to shore and neighbors emerge from there homes to greet each other after the winter hibernation.  Even the rainy days do not weaken our spirits for without them – the flowers may not bloom and the grass will not green.  The spring rain has fresh smell as it falls from the sky.  I love the spring.

The start of this year’s spring is the perfect time to tell you about one of my favorite things – the butterfly.   My mother has always loved butterflies for their shear beauty and the vast variety of sizes and colors they come in.    My love of the butterfly is more recent.  Although, I agree with my mother that the butterfly is unique in its beauty and diversity, my love of butterflies is more symbolic

Purple butterflies are the symbol used for Fibromyalgia; much like the pick ribbon is symbolic of breast cancer.  Their link to a condition I suffer from was the reason for my initial attraction to them.   Butterflies however are rich meaning in many cultures.   A sampling of the symbolism is as follows.

Butterflies symbolize:

·         a form of freedom or liberty
·         all positive characteristics of nature
·         a multicultural symbol of nature
·         rebirth  (Old cultural idea)
·         fun or celebration . (Modern times)
·         a state of naturalness and purity.  (Modern times)
·         when a butterfly enters your guestroom and   perches behind   you, the personwhom you most love is coming to see you.(Japanese superstition)
·         when a butterfly lands on you it means good luck

It’s pretty apparent that butterflies are used as a symbol in many cultures throughout time.   I have not yet mentioned the symbolism for which I relate to most strongly.  The stages of development from caterpillar to cocoon and finally a butterfly can be described as a process of metamorphosis (or undergoing a transformation or transition. So, this is why I love butterflies, they represent change, transitioning from one state to another.   The butterfly is a metaphor for my wellness journey.

To further honor the butterfly, I have included some my favorite quotes about the butterfly.
